tl;dr: Discover and report back on two distinctly different media installations that you haven't seen before. Research and critially review them. Report on why you think they are interesting / exciting examples as well as the strategies they use to create hybrid environments with media.
Learning Objectives
In addition to the standard looking out objectives, here we specifically hope to:
- Become familiar with key artists and works in the area of installation art;
- Become familiar with the variety of media installations by researching them;
- Explore strategies and technologies for combining media and space to create compelling experiences through examples;
- Reflect on how you might create compelling media installation experiences;
Selecting the works
You’re asked to identify two installations which involve media in some form or another. Regardless, it should be a installation you find personally interesting, appealing, etc and you shouldn’t have seen them before (i.e. a discovery!)
A set of starting points are provided in this weeks resource section.
Constraints
- The artwork must be an installation (but it doesn’t need to be interactive).
- The installation should have a physical component (i.e. it shouldn’t be screen based or a simple projection) - there should be some materiality, integration with space, objects or architecture
- The artwork must include a digital media component.
- The artwork should relate to the description given in the module (see context).
Food for thought
When you’re beginning your exploration, you might pick one or more of these as guides to what you want to dig into in your research. Are you interested in exploring:
- Technologies: The use of projection mapping or directed audio installations;
- Interactivity/Participation: Exploring the role of human engagement and action in creating the media space;
- Contexts: Site specific works or works in unusual locations (e.g. outdoor or urban installations);
- Artists: Compare and contrast a couple of works from the career of a single artist.;
- Materials: How does media work with materials like wood, paper, mist to create interesting spaces? Can you find two projects that use the same material in radically different ways?
- Perception: Many artists play with ideas of illusion, perception to create new spaces, forms, and experience;
What to write up:
Follow the guidelines for posting a looking out to Slack. Include in your post the following:
- Artwork: An image of the artwork
- Credits: Artist’s name, Title of work, year produced
- Work: Describe the work you selected? How was it made? What tools/technologies/techniques are used?
- Installation: Why is it an interesting example of media performance? What elements do you find appealing? Critique it.
- Strategies: How are they constructing a media space? Why? What techniques are they using to create a compelling experience? Is it successful?
Keep it brief! The post should be no more than 200 words and well illustrated (images, videos, etc.)
